Watching the MountainTown Singers on stage and listening to them banter with each other may lead you to presume that “H.A.M.” has everything to do with their behavior or personalities. It’s not true…well, it is in one sense, but there’s more to it.
H.A.M. is an acronym for a set of goals that the Mt Pleasant Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society operates by, and the MountainTown Singers strive to achieve. It is the result of two years worth of planning and is how the chapter has decided to focus itself.
The MountainTown Singers have a simple but effective set of goals that, when filtered to the simplest form, looks like H.A.M.
- = High Standards
“High Standards” is shorthand for “continue to advance the quality of performances, in all areas, of the chorus.” This not only includes singing and performing, but community involvement, service to others and chapter business practices.
- = Ambassadors for Singing
“Ambassadors for Singing” is plucked directly from the chapter’s second stated goal; “continue our role as ambassadors for singing in the community and region”. This means that the chapter will encourage singing by everyone in every way possible. One primary way this is accomplished is through the Harmony Explosion summer camp.
- = Meaningful Musical Experiences
“Meaningful Musical Experiences” also comes directly from the chapter’s goal set. “create meaningful music experiences to drive membership growth and retention”. This goal has evolved to include our audiences and our desire to provide meaningful experiences for them as well.
So the next time you sit down to a holiday dinner or hear Chip Gaines ask Joanna for a H.A.M. sandwich, we bet you think of the MountainTown Singers.
We do!
